Decorating your dance studio for the holiday season can add a twinkle of magic to the classroom. But on top of everything else you must accomplish during December, it can make decorating your studio feel less like fun, and more like a hassle. We are here to spark your inspiration with three days of dance studio holiday hacks!

Our holiday hacks are not only inspirational, they are also cheap and easy to make! PLUS, these hacks don’t require you to buy ANY new decorations! Utilize materials that are already hiding in your studio… Costumes, catalogs, hairpieces, shoes and more can create the winter wonderland of your dreams.

HACK #1…Paper Ornaments!

10 minute assembly

Watch how-to video below!

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

– An old Revolution catalog

– Scissors

– Hot glue gun

– Ribbon

HOW TO ASSEMBLE

Step 1: Choose holiday themed pages from an old catalog and rip them out.

Step 2: Cut out 16 same-size circles from the pages.

Step 3: Fold each circle in half.

Step 4: Spread hot glue on one half of a circle and stack another circle half on top of it (Note: All halves should be facing the same direction). Repeat for all circles. You should end with a stack of 16 circle cut outs glued to each other, facing the same direction in a pile.

Step 5: Cut a piece of ribbon and hot glue gun the ends together to make a loop.

Step 6: Add a drop of hot glue to the bottom of the ribbon loop, and attached to the binded side of the stack of circles.

Step 7: Open up the circle stack to make a round shape and hot glue gun the ends together.

Step 8: Hang on your tree for decorative, homemade ornaments!

HACK #1…THE TUTU TREE!

10 minute assembly

Watch how-to video below!

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

      • A mannequin form and stand
      • 6 to 8 tutus in various sizes
      • A Revolution costume

Optional:

      • Ornaments
      • Ribbon
      • Tree lights

HOW TO ASSEMBLE

Step 1: Assemble the mannequin stand, but keep the mannequin form off to the side for now.

Step 2: Slide the tutus in descending order on the mannequin stand, with the largest tutu on the bottom and the smallest on the top. Take the attached hanger loops of the bottom tutu, and loop them through the loop holes of the second tutu. Repeat this for all tutus until they are all looped together in a chain.

Step 3: Dress the mannequin form in your favorite holiday themed Revolution costume. Then, attach the form to the tip top of the mannequin stand.

Step 4: Take the top tutu and dress the mannequin body with the waistband underneath the costume. You can secure with clips or safety pins. All of the looped tutus will cascade below creating a tree effect.

Step 5: Add lights, ornaments, ribbon or any other desired tree dressings.

Step 6: Place the Tutu Tree in a corner of your lobby for a festive treat that parents, teacher and kids can appreciate!

Six Tried and True Preschool Recital Dances ›

Posted November 22, 2017 in Recitals, Tips and Tricks

By Tiffany Henderson with Amanda Scott of Twinkle Star Dance

Let’s be frank, this time of year is hectic! Add that you’re a dance studio owner into the mix and the rush of the holidays also includes receiving and exchanging holiday show costumes, selling holiday show tickets, ordering holiday show concessions, printing holiday show programs, ordering holiday show t-shirts, organizing a holiday staff party, managing teachers and admin time off, managing subs.. the list is endless.

quote-10

In the midst of all the holiday chaos, studio owners are also hoping to get a jump on organizing our recitals for the spring. Trust me, I feel your pain! Choreography and costumes are not something that we should slack on planning and executing. In fact, recital is one of the most important studio events we manage in a season. We already talked about how successful recital performance means increased student retention for the following dance season here.

However, creating successful recitals doesn’t mean you have to reinvent the wheel every year. In my nearly 20 years of owning dance studios, I have found expert ways to save time and still produce great shows:

1. The first is separating my preschool dancers ages 2-6 into their own 30 minute showcase and using thesame tried and true dances (link to TSD Now page).  We call them “Twinkle Star Dance Shine Showcases” and my 3,000+ dancers and their families love them!

2. The second is choosing adorable costumes that coordinate with the choreography while still being at an affordable price point.  This year, I teamed up with Revolution to highlight six recital dances (and matching costumes) I use for my 2-6 year olds with lots of success onstage.

Here are Six Tried and True Preschool Recital Dances:

Click on the links below to see the sample recital choreography and matching costumes

  1. Little Tap Shoes ages 2-3
  2. Baby Bumble Bee ages 2-3
  3. Baby Take a Bow ages 3-4
  4. Sound of Music ages 3-4
  5. Over the Rainbow ages 4-5
  6. New York, New York ages 4-5

Why I Took Control of Preschool Dance Choreography ›

Posted November 16, 2017 in Recitals

By Guest Bloggers: Tiffany Henderson and Amanda Scott of Twinkle Star Dance

In my nearly 20 years owning dance studios I’ve made my fair share of mistakes. When we expanded into our second location, for example, I was sitting in the back of the theater during dress rehearsal and watched a group dancers onstage on all fours in a pink pig costume horrified. The following year one of my teachers performed onstage with her Twinkle Babies ages 2-3 in her jeans and flip flops.

My feelings of panic solidified the fact that I needed more control over my preschool dance program and the choreography that my studio was presenting onstage. Let’s be honest, when things go wrong at your studio the responsibility always comes back to us, the studio owner. Also, a bad class performance almost inevitably results in losing customers.

quote-10

Say it with me.. Preschool Dance Choreography is a learned skill. We cannot assume that because a teacher danced professionally or attended a prestigious college dance program that they understand choreography for preschool dancers…they do not!  Experience is the ONLY teacher for this. We are held accountable for how dancers look on stage (not teachers) and a successful recital means increased student retention the following season.

I created Twinkle Star Dance recital choreography so that my teachers could focus on teaching the movements and not coming up with the content. They receive the complete choreographed dance and edited music upfront so they can teach with the end in mind. No more experimenting on my students!
